Our furniture, especially our antiques, is usually a lifetime investment. Therefore, it is essential to keep it in good shape. Unfortunately, antiques require much more attention to keep them looking good because of their age and what they have been through. This type of furniture requires a different approach than a non-antique piece.
Improper refinishing will usually reduce the value of a piece, while improper fixing may lead to it being much more difficult to properly restore later, or even worse:  complete destruction of the original craftsman's vision.

Fixing an antique must be done with the understanding of how it was built, what kind of wood was used and what technique was used to finish the piece.  The value of a piece will go down if, for example, the old patina is removed. Being able to tell what kind of finish was used in order to replace it with one that matches, or is better than, the old one is vital in a proper restoration operation.

Our knowledge about veneer repairs and fixing
In most cases, the reason antiques have to be repaired is due to climate change during a move, or simply seasonal changes. Very often a 150 to 200 year old piece that is shipped from Europe is in perfect condition, but upon arrival at our workshop, it requires much attention because of improper handling as well as the drastic climate change. Usually after the first winter, you will be able to tell whether your piece will require further attention. It is very likely that after a long journey from Europe, being exposed to the moist conditions of ocean voyage, the bone based glue that had held the piece together for so long will start to lose its strength. And, as the wood slowly starts to adapt to the dry climate, shifting, shrinking, splitting, and separation of the veneer may take place. Very rarely antiques brought in from Europe stay as they were purchased. Very often they will require the attention of a specialist.
This does not even begin to address the everyday abuse that our furniture takes.  How many times do we move in a lifetime?  How many times do we re-arrange a room?  How many times do our little bundles of joy bump something (ofttimes themselves) into the furniture
